PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR HEADACHES

CAN PERSISTENT HEADACHES CAN BE RESOLVED?

Headaches and migraines can severely impact your concentration, activity and quality of life. They are the most common disorders of the nervous system. Headaches are a common side effect people suffer as a result of body/ head trauma, concussion, whiplash, prolonged poor postural positions and changes in physical movements.

Research has shown that all headaches have a relationship with the upper cervical spine due to a sensitised brain stem. Most of headaches can be treated and managed with Physiotherapy.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM MY TREATMENT?

First, your Physiotherapist will identify what is the cause of the headache. There can be many causes which may be one or many of the following:

Once the cause of your headache has been identified, the Physiotherapist will start migraine Physiotherapy treatment. This includes myofascial release (soft tissue therapy), targeted massage if muscles are tight and gentle mobilisation of your facet joints in the upper back and neck. Usually dry needling is offered as an option as it is extremely effective at improving headache symptoms and migraines. Acupuncture based treatments are recommended but not entirely necessary to achieve great results.

Every Physiotherapy session will be followed up with exercises for you to continue the program at home for best results. They will be explained in a clear way and you will receive video examples with each progression.

WILL ACC COVER HEADACHE TREATMENT?

We can evaluate your headache symptoms in our Whangarei Physiotherapy clinic, Northland Physiotherapy to determine whether they are related to an accident, if so, it is likely you will have ACC cover.

DOES PHYSIOTHERAPY HELP WITH HEADACHES?

Yes, Physiotherapy can fix your headache. The treatment is backed by continually evolving research and our Physiotherapists are highly skilled and keep up to date with the latest treatment options for headaches and migraines.

Headaches can occur from trauma, tight muscles or muscular fatigue. Stress on the head or neck can causes excessive compression through your joints and effect the nerves which can trigger your pain receptors, because of this, headaches can come on suddenly or gradually over a period of time.
